Ubuntu 11.10 server running Squid Proxy and sarg.

For the proxy server we decided to do a Ubuntu 11.10 running a Squid proxy server with the Squid Analysis Reporting Tools to keep track on which sites are visited during the day.

To begin with we installed a clean Ubuntu 11.10 with no addons except for the SSH server.

To make configuration easier we installed Webmin the following way:
wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.580_all.deb
sudo dpkg –install webmin_1.580_all.deb

and as this need additional software we did a
sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl apt-show-versions python
and then a
sudo apt-get install -f to make it all happen.

Installing the Squid Proxy server was done with the
sudo apt-get install squid command

and installing the sarg was done with the
sudo apt-get install sarg command.


To configure Ubuntu, Squid or create/watch reports from sarg we simply open the Webmin webinterface on our clientmachine using the address of
